Book Review: Mississippi Jack: Being an Account of the Further Waterborne Adventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman, Fine Lady, and Lily of the West

Mississippi Jack: Being an Account of the Further Waterborne Adventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman, Fine Lady, and Lily of the West by L.A. Meyer Reviewed by: Lori Twichell Genre: Historical, YA, Adventure Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers Publication Date: September 2010 You would think that at this point, Jacky Faber had done nearly everything that a teenage girl could do in the mid-1800’s. She’s captained a ship, joined a British naval crew, fallen in love, attended a girl’s finishing school, rescued herself from pirates…it’s hard to imagine that she’d have more adventures left. But then again, it’s Jacky. It’s hard to picture her ever slowing down. This time she’s…

Morning Sex? (warning: graphic image) | Rebeca Seitz’s Blog

    August 16, 2013 / No Comments

Rebeca Seitz is a friend of mine. She is the owner of Glass Road Media Management. Throughout her career, Rebeca has done publicity for authors, films and other entertainment outlets and now she’s managing authors, creating content and working across platforms to maximize the message. As long as I’ve known her, she’s always wanted to change entertainment for the better. Recently, when she and her 8 year old son were watching Good Morning America, Rebeca’s platform took a very unique turn. “I understand we’ve ceded the idea of morality in primetime. A moronic move, but one we (and by “we” I mean Jesus-following folk) have to own. But this wasn’t…

Book Review: In the Belly of the Bloodhound: Being an Account of a Particularly Peculiar Adventure in the Life of Jacky Faber

    August 16, 2013 / No Comments

In the Belly of the Bloodhound: Being an Account of a Particularly Peculiar Adventure in the Life of Jacky Faber by L.A. Meyer Reviewed by: Lori Twichell Genre: Historical, YA, Adventure Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers Publication Date: October 2008 In all of the places of the world where Jacky Faber felt that she might be safe, she considered the Lawson Peabody School for girls high on the list. Unfortunately, this is far from the case. Jacky and her schoolmates board a small ship for what’s supposed to be a day outing but quickly turns into the most dangerous adventure that Jacky’s ever experienced. What started out as a…

    Instead of WWJD….

    August 15, 2013 / 9 Comments

At this point in time, it’s probably safe to say that a large majority of the planet’s population has seen the phrase “What Would Jesus Do?” somewhere. Hats, shirts, bracelets, notebooks, bumper stickers… (For those who are wondering, the picture is a wall decal you can find here.) With clever bits of merchandising, this tagline has saturated the market for product integration into life. Despite the fact that it’s been so overused it’s become a parody of itself, it’s still a question that those who follow Christ should be considering on a regular basis. For me, this phrase usually takes me to a place with a lot of robed guys…

Back to School! Um…wait. I Homeschool.

    August 13, 2013 / No Comments

Summer’s over! Time to get back to school! For those in public or private school, uniforms are being purchased and supplies are sitting in nice orderly stacks just waiting to be used. Right now they’re neat and tidy – not a mark out of place. No torn covers or bent pages. Those crayons and pens and notebooks have worlds of untapped possibilities. It’s exciting! But I homeschool, so things are different now. Instead of rainbows of crayons and colors, my get back to school involves plotting schedules and choosing curriculum. The organized and savvy homeschooling parents have already chosen their curriculum and many of them are already into their school…

The Curse of the Blue Tattoo by L.A. Meyer Reviewed by: Lori Twichell Genre: YA, historical, adventure, Audiobook Publisher: Graphia /Listen & Live Audio Publication Date: 2004 Jacky Faber is back! When we last left Miss Faber, her female identity had been discovered by the crew of the H.M.S. Dolphin, leaving her in the direst sort of situation for a young girl on a British Naval vessel. In order to keep her safe, they’ve imprisoned her in the brig and now the men in charge have a plan for her; they are going to drop her off at the Lawson Peabody School for girls in Boston.
