    My Thoughts on The Shack

    March 3, 2017 / 1 Comment

Unless you have been under a rock, you’ve likely heard about the movie, The Shack. Open confession here: I haven’t read the book. That usually makes most people gasp and freak out when I say it. I read books professionally, so it’s just assumed that I read this one. When I was invited to this early screening (thank you KSLR, The Fish San Antonio and my friend Audra!) I was able to step in and watch without any preconceived notions. But I will admit here that I was freaked out a little. My newsfeed on Facebook these days doesn’t look too awfully different than it did during the election. Instead…

    Book Review: Echoes in Death

    February 23, 2017 / No Comments

Echoes in Death by J.D. Robb Genre: science fiction, mystery, suspense, thriller Publisher: St. Martins Press/Macmillian Date: February 7, 2017 Reviewed by: Lori Twichell Eve Dallas hates dressing up and going out on the town. She would honestly prefer being in the morgue during an autopsy than going out for a night on the town. Roarke, understanding his wife’s likes and dislikes, doesn’t usually ask Eve to go out to big events. But on this one occasion, she realizes that she needs to suck it up and just do it. So she dresses up and spends the evening rubbing elbows with the rich, beautiful, and famous. As much as she’s…

Review: The Orphan’s Tale by Pam Jenoff

    February 21, 2017 / No Comments

Title:  The Orphan’s Tale Author: Pam Jenoff Genre: historical Publisher: MIRA Date:  February 21, 2017 Sixteen year old Noa had a life that was serviceable. It wasn’t anyone’s dream life but she had a roof over her head and parents who met her needs – for the most part. That all changed when she revealed to her folks that she was going to have a baby. Not only that, the father was a Nazi. Thrown out with no possibility of returning home, she had to make her way in the world when things were already impossibly hard for everyone. She thought she had a plan for her life when she found a home…

Book Review: My (not so) Perfect Life

    February 7, 2017 / No Comments

My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella Genre: romance, chick lit Publisher: The Dial Press Date: February 7, 2017 Katie Brenner has a plan for her life and it most certainly does not include the farm where she grew up. In fact, she has completely transformed herself in order to fit into a London world. New hair, new style and even a new name. (Cat is so much cooler than Katie isn’t it?) And when she overhears some women in the bathroom making fun of her accent, she works hard to make that go away too. She’s got the mind for marketing. She picks things up quickly and her…

Review: A Perilous Undertaking by Deanna Raybourn

    January 9, 2017 / No Comments

Title: A Perilous Undertaking Author: Deanna Raybourn Genre: mystery, historical Publisher: Berkley Date:  January 10, 2017 Veronica Speedwell is back! And I for one, am utterly delighted.  But before I get into that, let me give a little backstory. Veronica Speedwell is an intrepid young butterfly hunter. Doesn’t sound too exciting does it? But she is so much more than that. Her past, shrouded in mystery, reveals that she is connected much more deeply and highly than she ever imagined. And that’s where we left her at the end of the last adventure. This time around, she’s being called upon by those highly connected folks to insert herself and her…

Book Review: Semi-Scripted by Amanda Heger

    December 29, 2016 / No Comments

Semi Scripted by Amanda Heger Genre: Romance Publisher: Diversion Publishing Date November 8, 2016 Marisol Gutierrez is not a fan of big speeches or standing up in front of people. She’s not good in crowds, doesn’t really like to schmooze and hates the idea that she might disappoint someone. And this time, things are absolutely over the top stressful because her family’s entire medical practice in Nicaragua depends on her standing in front of a room full of people and trying to get a grant for the practice. But when she gets to Los Angeles, she decides she’s going to splurge on one thing – she wants to see a…
