Recently I reviewed the Action Bible Devotional from David C. Cook and I loved it. So did my kids. It actually created a bit of a sensation in our house. All three of my kids were scrambling to look at it and better yet, READ it! The devotional covers 52 (one per week) stories and gives kids a lot of activities and insight into the stories.
When I found out that the devotional was based on a full Bible, I was hooked. I immediately got in touch with David C. Cook and asked if I could review it and let me tell you, there was much delight in our house when this package arrived.
The Action Bible is a hardcover picture Bible that is created in graphic novel (some of us remember those as comic book) format and it’s glorious. The hardcover binding is sturdy and holds together even in smaller, less careful hands. The pictures are also amazing. I don’t usually do this, but I’ve posted a link to the trailer for the Bible on Youtube. It shows glimpses of some of the beautiful illustrations that are included in this book.
The stories are concise, clear and geared well toward children. I have been delighted to see all three of my kids (13 year old daughter, 10 year old daughter and 8 year old son) reading this Bible at various points during the day. In fact we’ve actually had to work out squabble over whose turn it really is now! I can honestly say that I’ve never experienced anything like this with a Bible before.
What delighted me the most as a mom is that after they read the stories that are in this Bible, all three of them have begun asking questions or researching the stories further in their own study Bibles. My son was very clear when I asked him what he liked about it so much. He looked at me and said, “Mom, the stories are always black and white in my other Bible. I mean they’re cool but they’re not like this. This makes it real!”
I couldn’t honestly ask for any more from a Bible for my kids. It’s worked well for all three ages in our house and it has completely driven my kids toward reading their Bibles and studying more. (Side note: It’s really hard to get grumpy with a kid who hasn’t taken out the trash because he’s sitting underneath his school desk reading the Bible. Seriously!)
Oh and the video? My son knows that I do work in the film industry and he asked me if I wrote the ‘commercial’ based off of him – because many of the things in this video have happened at our house.
The Action Bible? Two thumbs WAY up from this very happy and very delighted mom – and her three eager Bible reading kids!
Note: We also received three copies of The Action Bible Christmas Story. This is a 17 page pamphlet that shares the birth of Christ from The Action Bible. I would highly recommend these for any event where there are going to be a lot of children. They are sold in packs of 25 and they were well done beautiful pamphlets that would be easy to distribute and fun for kids to receive. Well worth the value!
Rated PG – This goes into all of the Bible stories so some things may be better served with parental guidance. But really, this Bible is fabulous and well done – I’d recommend it for anyone who wants to work on getting their kids into the Bible!
Review copy provided by the publisher – thank you!
