The Year that proved Nothing is Trivial

Dearest Gentle Reader,

It’s been a very long time since I last updated here. But that doesn’t mean all has been quiet. I’ve just been working on behind the scenes things for a while. It’s finally time for a long overdue update!

First, a little backstory

I have been around microphones in some way, shape, or form, for most of my career. Radio. A live radio call-in show online for years. Audio drama. Voice work. And yes, podcasting. A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away, back when podcasting was so early that it wasn’t cool, I hosted a podcast about an audio drama that I wrote. It was long before fancy recording and hosting options.

In fact, my co-host and I recorded our podcast by patching together phone calls between Michigan and Texas. The technical details of how it got edited and distributed was his job. Not mine. I showed up, wrote, and talked. I understood enough of the tech side to have decent conversations about it, but knowing and doing are different things.

So when the idea of a podcast came buzzing around my mind, it didn’t seem too far out of reach. That’s where It’s Nothing Trivial was born. It didn’t feel like a huge leap for me. I was ready for the content and the recording. I knew what I had to offer and podcasting was a good way to package my industry knowledge and expertise.

When I was mulling all of this over, a friend with a thriving podcast of his own encouraged me to stop planning and start recording. His philosophy was that I could get stuck in planning phase and never actually do it. As someone who looks at every angle all the time, that made sense to me. So I jumped in.

I found out very quickly that the business of running a podcast is its own education. There’s a lot to it. And I was getting that education in real time while also trying to produce my own content, manage clients, and working on writing projects to pay the bills. It was a spectacular circus of chaos. Not all bad. But definitely not all good either.

Still, I had launched and I was not about to un-launch. After all, I was learning and it was improving with each episode. Right?

But then…

…several things happened all at once. My health took a big hit. Suddenly I was unable to sit at the microphone or desk for long periods. And then my friend who had been helping me learn the ins and outs of podcasting died very suddenly. The doubts, concerns and questions that he once answered with grace and encouragement turned into big black holes that were fabulous echo chambers for all the doubts I had about this adventure.

This meant that for a while, everything stopped as I tried to manage my health, my work, and my grief.

When the dust settled enough for me to see more clearly, I realized that It’s Nothing Trivial never quite matched what I had originally envisioned. So now that I have a very basic education on podcasting and things have settled a bit for me healthwise, it’s time to really settle into this podcast. So get ready for It’s Nothing Trivial…the reboot! 2.0? The Next Level? (Okay, okay…I’ll workshop that a little more!) Whatever it’s being called, It’s Nothing Trivial will be coming back for your listening enjoyment in 2027.

So why are we talking about it now? Well, an interesting opportunity has arisen and I’m excited about it. As you may or may not know, Ted Lasso has returned for a previously unexpected Season Four. I have been asked to join Culture Alchemy, a podcast hosted by Antoinette Sarpong, to discuss each new Ted Lasso episode as they air. So every week, I’ll be sitting down with some amazing people to talk all things Ted. I thought that would be a nice way to ease back into the podcasting groove.
