Homeschool

Homeschool project: Twitter

I’ve been a homeschooling mom for going on three years now. When you walk into our house, you can tell we homeschool. We don’t have a decorating scheme or layout in our living area as much as we have a classroom. There are massive maps stuck to the walls and print outs of memory verses all around the house. We have globes and binders and notebooks….oh my!

One of the things we have in our living room that always intrigues people is our twitter board.

I adapted it from something I found on Pinterest.  It’s really easy to do and the kids enjoy posting their thoughts. (And no, I didn’t pay anyone for that last update there.) This project took less than an hour for us to assemble but the kids have used it almost daily since we did.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 piece of foam core board (My kids picked out the shiny prism design.)
  • Posterboard (We did three separate colors – one for each child.)
  • Contact paper or a laminator.
  • Velcro dots (or glue)

We went to the store and had a great time picking out the foam core. It matches nothing in our décor, but I decided a long time ago that I want a lived in house (school room!) and not a museum, so I wasn’t stressed about that too much. If you want a design that matches your house though, there are so many colors it should be easy to find something that works for you.

Once we had everything at home, we measured the foam core board to see how wide and long our Twitter panels needed to be and then we cut them to fit. We covered them in contact paper, but if you  have a laminator, that would work too.

We decided that instead of gluing them straight to the board, we would use Velcro sticky dots. This way, if the kids wanted a change or if one of the panels got ruined or started to wear, we didn’t have to replace the whole board. It also gives the kids the opportunity to take the panel down and bring it to their desks to do the writing instead of doing it on the board itself.

My kids love having this space and I love being able to see their thoughts.

Anyone else out there have fun craft or homeschool projects to share? I’d love to hear about them! And if you like Pinterest, I’m there almost every day pinning new things. I’d love to connect with you there.
