Review: The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman

Anyone who has read my reviews for a while knows that I love time travel. I was an Outlander reader from day one, I adore Doctor Who, and Quantum Leap was my introduction to the eccentricities of fandom. And obviously, I adore books as well! So when a book about an Invisible library and a time traveling librarian comes across my desk, it pretty much becomes a must read.

Irene is a professional spy for the Library. Not A library. THE Library. This is a super-secret organization that travels through different realities gathering up and collecting important works of literature. Their librarians are trained in tactics far beyond just knowing the dewey decimal system! Languages, self-defense, martial arts and other extraordinary tactics are all employed when you are a librarian.
Irene’s mission is to recover a very important book, except that when she’s arrived, the book has already been stolen. Not only that, several factions are involved and each of them is trying to track down this same book. The danger level involved in this particular case has just taken a leap to alarming new levels. And just who is this new assistant that Irene has been assigned to train? It seems like poor timing but something more lurks under the surface. He’s got far more going on than he’s saying.

The Invisible Library is an utterly delightful journey through possibility. Time, space, universes, danger, mystery, intrigue…there is nothing missing from this adventure.  I found myself getting completely caught up and lost in everything that was happening and though it was a digital copy, I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough. Genevieve Cogman’s creative genius is on full display here and it is something brilliant to behold.

The Invisible Library is a world that is filled (some might even say overfilled – as if that’s possible!) with information and knowledge, but it is tempered with impeccable manners, unwritten rules, and an elegance that weaves its way through every page. If you need a story that you can utterly and completely sink into and forget everyday stressors for a while, this is it!
